September 2

Today is Labor Day for 2013.

1885  In one of the worst examples of race based violence in Western US history, 150 white miners in Rock Springs, brutally attack their Chinese coworkers, killing 28, wounding 15 others, and driving several hundred more out of town. Governor Warren intervened to stop further bloodshed by having Federal troops sent to Rock Springs, and he himself went there, and to Evanston where it appeared that the violence might spread to.

1901     Vice President Theodore Roosevelt offered the advice, "Speak softly and carry a big stick," in a speech at the Minnesota State Fair.

1953  The first dial telephone system in Carbon County opened in Hanna.  Attribution:  Wyoming State Historical Society.
