An enduring memory was of the VFW selling "Bloody Poppies", paper poppies that men used to decorate their lapels on Veterans Day, when men still wore jackets that had lapels. The funds went to support VFW programs for veterans.<br /><br />One little oddity of that is that when I was a kid there was also a housing subdivision at the foot of the mountain oddly named "Bloody Turnip".
